I just read this excellent in-depth interview with Babatunde Olatunji, the Nigerian drummer who was almost single handedly responsible for introducing African music and dance to the United States in the late 1950's. i have a DVD of a performance from the 80's featuring Olatunji, Garcia, Hart, Santana, etc.
also some great portions with Hamza El Din.
it was a benefit for teaching world music and culture in schools.
good stuff.
I'd like to borrow that sometime...
