free jazz blog
thanks to greg davis for tipping me off to this italian (i think) free jazz blog that offers downloads of a bunch of weird & rare free jazz, both american & european. its called 'Jizz Relics - Archivio fonografico di musica estemporanea' & i think it only lets you download one set for free before signing up for the 'premium service' which is still pretty cheap. i downloaded don cherry & the Brotzmann Trio - Berlin, Germany 27 august 1971. it's a lot like the don cherry swedish radio sessions cd i got from ben awhile back. lots of flutes & percussion with energetic bursts of traditional loud free jazz sax & trumpet & drums. really great & mostly laid back music. ok, maybe the pretty laid back was a little premature- it gets freaking chaotic after awhile. nothing like a good don cherry noisefest!
ps. dont forget tomorrow oak cd release party!

the smittens & the icicles
indie-pop sweethearts the smittens are playing a rare local show this saturday 4/28 at parima in burlington. playing with them is a michigan band i'm unfamiliar with called the icicles. one thing i did learn about the band is that they are part of the microindie collective, an interesting project in grand rapids, michigan, with a goal of bringing more independent pop bands
to the area and promoting local pop music. maybe a little more organization in the burlington community could bring in bigger and better bands? now that we've passed the 'sonic youth test' as ben put it we have to do what we can to get good bands here. thats why i'm so glad there are some local music promoters who are aiming for something a little different, such as burlington sounds & tick tick. support local music this weekend!

tonight at 1/2 lounge
here's a show i just heard about today...
another great night of music from gabby & burette, the lovely couple behind the cush.
first off gabby plays solo some material from her side project the dweller's.
the dweller's has a soulful, psychedelic, melancholy folk/country sound.
then burette plays solo some material from his side project the lonestar chain. the lonestar chain has a country/rock, good story tellin', melodic, camping out under the stars sound.
7-9pm tonight (4/26) at the half lounge.

the sound of urchin & "party star" & tell no one
the sound of urchin are a rock/alternative/metal band in the same vein as ween. actually, according to dean ween s.o.u are "the 2nd greatest band in rock today" jack black says "If there's one thing on this earth that I fear, it is The Sound of Urchin" why the sudden interest in a band i usually wouldn't give a shit about? because they are playing thursday & friday at nectars with locals tell no one on thursday & "party star" on friday.

Vermont State Senators Vote for Impeachment?
from Peter Freyne's great political blog, Freyne Land.
Vermont’s state senators do support a resolution requiring the United States House Judiciary Committee to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president and the vice president of the United States.
WHEREAS, President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney have exercised the duties of their respective offices with respect to both domestic and foreign affairs in ways that raise serious questions of constitutionality, statutory legality and abuse of the public trust;
WHEREAS, the president’s conduct in his role as commander-in-chief leading our nation into the military conflict in Iraq and the vice president’s continual advocacy for American troops remaining in Iraq have cost the United States much of the good will that was extended in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States;
WHEREAS, the president and the vice president’s domestic leadership on issues relating to individual privacy and personal liberty under law has raised constitutional issues of the greatest concern to the nation’s citizenry;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, that the Senate of the State of Vermont urges Vermont’s representatives in the United States House of Representatives to introduce, and Vermont’s United States senators to support, a resolution requiring the United States House Judiciary Committee to initiate impeachment proceedings against the President and the Vice President of the United States, and be it further resolved that the secretary of the Senate be directed to send a copy of this resolution to United States Represenative Peter Welch, United States Senator Patrick J. Leahy, and United States Senator Bernard Sanders.

so with the 20$ pure pop gift certificate I won from being trivia master of the month over at spitting out teeth I purchased 2 cd's: 'moonchild' by john zorn fet. mike patton, trevor dunn, and joey baron; and 'revolution of the mind: live at the apollo vol. III 1971' by the godfather, james brown. thanks again to jay, and god or my dad or whoever it was that instilled so much trivial knowledge in me.

Virginia Tech. Disaster
how in the hell does something like this happen? first reports of shots fired was at 7:15am- several die- then the gunman goes across campus and kills twenty plus more until finally shot (maybe self inflicted) at 9:22am? where the fuck were campus security & police & swat & the fucking national guard in those 2 hours? this is mind-blowing...wow, thirty three people- what a fucking waste.

so it goes...
Kurt Vonnegut died. Slaughter House 5 & Sirens of Titan are two of my favorite novels. Funny sci-fi weirdness. here's a great obituary.
a little 'all roads lead to the grateful dead' trivia: jerry garcia was a big Vonnegut fan, he named his publishing company ice nine & he owned the rights to the sirens of titan- always wanted to turn it into a movie but I guess it never panned out...

discover jazz
The Burlington Discover Jazz Fest just released the schedule for this years events. Nothing really caught my eyes except the Kenny Garrett Quartet with special guest Pharoah Sanders: Lee "Scratch" Perry: & maybe Chick Corea and Bela Fleck. I still cant believe I missed Rashied Ali a couple years back...what the hell was I thinking?
And on top of that I learned today that Dinosaur Jr. was playing at higher ground in june and this years 'concert's on the green' at shelburne museum are wilco with low & emmylou harris. the summer is looking up, eh?

black women/sonny sharrock
this is a great late 60's free jazz record from guitarist sonny sharrock featuring linda sharrock, milford graves, and teddy daniel. explosive guitar & drums with linda's wailing vocals throughout- this little gem is slowly becoming one of my favorite albums- its slightly more accessible than some of the sax driven free jazz records- nothing is going to hurt your ears, although the vocals get pretty wild in some spots... and one of the tracks has the greatest name ever, "Portrait of Linda in Three Colors, All Black"
one of my favorite things about sonny, except for his playing, of course, is that he turned down an audition for the miles davis band because he thought that the uncredited solo he played on davis' 'a tribute to jack johnson' spoke for itself. take that, miles!

sunny sunday morning...
the oak show last night was fantastic- drone and folky sounds from guitar, bass, oboe, flutes, violin, subtle drums & electrics- sp toby & chris have really created a great mix of sound & performance and I loved every second of it- the crowd was way into it and I stood there half drunk (it was bender's birthday & he just got home from costa rica so sure, I'd been at the op) swaying to the music just kinda shaking my head in gladness. listen for them may 2nd on UVM's WRUV Exposure & may 23rd at the langdon st. cafe.
checkout highgate (blog) for pictures of the lovely trip tanner jenny & I took to highgate (town) for a great traditional vermont maple brunch.
