busy early june

jazz fest starts tomorrow & there are tons of shows up & down church street and in all the clubs and bars & tourists everywhere & you can catch all the high school jazz bands featuring future music stars.

coltrane interview 1960

just audio, so you have to suffer through a montage of tranes album covers for six minutes, but its totally worth hearing him talk about his music which was moving away from his hard bop stuff with miles davis at such a clip people were calling it angry, un-beautiful, un-music etc. I cant imagine what they thought of him 5 or 6 years later! 'making music that only the poets can understand' as elvin jones supposedly said.

top ten from the free jazz underground

"No matter how you listen to it JAZZ is ostensibly about FREEDOM.
FREEDOM and the MYSTERY surrounding it.
And, like MUSIC, it is an ABSTRACT.
It's SHAPES, FORMS (SOUNDS!) are DISTINCT and PERSONAL and SENSITIVE to each player's DESIRE.
And the DESIRE is INFINITE.
FREEDOM is not just another word for nothing left to lose.
We know this from MESSAGES beamed from the space-lantern of his cosmic highness SUN RA!
The MESSAGE was clear:

"NOTHING IS."

different music this weekend

this saturday there are a couple of unusual acts i wanted to let you all know about.

at the barre auditorium in barre (obviously) christian rock singer and vermont native mark shelton celebrates the release of his cd 'tribal nation' with a rock opera-like performance that promises "Sword fights, interpretive dance, special effects and more... as the Lord will be praised in song, drama, worship, and more." and more info here.

at radio bean the cleverly named 'white raag', a sitar tabla duo featuring tim sharbaugh, the drummer from deep soda performs at 9. but in radio bean time that means who the hell knows?

at dobra tea the alash ensemble, central asian Tuvan throat singers & musicians, perform at 8:30. according to there website, "Alash is carrying the proud traditions of Tuvan music into the future. They are among the first of a new generation of Tuvan musicians who have matured in the musically fertile and adventurous post-communist period in Tuva. Having been students not only of well-known musicians such as Kongar-ool Ondar, they are also recipients of the musical knowledge of their own families and regions"

huh- the le duo

sonny rollins, don cherry, henry grimes, billy higgins

my favorite comment:

'Quel bonheur de retrouver ce quartet unique regroupant musiciens free (Don Cherry, Henry Grimes) avec le Colosse du Saxophone Sonny Rollins poussés par un Billy Higgins irréprochable comme d'habitude.'

which, according to my handy google translate, means:

'Which happiness to find this single four-bit byte gathering musicians free (Don Cherry, Henry Grimes) with the Colossus of the Saxophone Sonny Rollins pushed by Billy Higgins irreproachable as usual.'

what is free improvisation?

a great essay written by christian munthe from stockholm university.

'Improvisation is the activity of, to some extent, creating and constructing a piece of music in the same time as it is being performed. Improvisation in this wide sense is a necessity in all performed music whether it is called arrangement, interpretation, ornamentation, reading or something else.'

sunday night

tonight at kriya studio raccoo-oo-oon performed a loud, drum & guitar filled almost perfect set of music. i hadn't listened to much before- just half the youtube clip i posted earlier- and & was totally surprised & delighted by the band- i bought one of there albums, behold secret kingdom, & maybe i'll give a proper review after a deep listen tomorrow.

listening to geechee recollections by marion brown- a great album i download from jizz relics- where else? also, through jizz relics, i came across a similar site called invisible record archive that also offers downloads of all kinds of music- mostly jazz related i think but there was stuff on there from lord buckley so anything goes.

heres some electric miles for ya- featuring the one and only jack dejohnette:

new records!

being new to the hipster record collecting club I set out today to north country books to expand my humble collection of 4 records (3 of which I just got from greg last weekend) here is what I found:

el Corazon by Don Cherry & Ed Blackwell- I was a little nervous buying a jazz album recorded in the early 80's- but I figured it would be ok because they stick to mainly acoustic instruments- no synth! Sparce & beautiful- I love Don Cherry- and he's quite the pianist, too.

Regeneration by Roswell Rudd, Steve Lacy, Misha Mengelberg, Kent Carter & Han Bennink- with one side dedicated to the music of Herbie Nichols and the other to Thelonious Monk this is the tamest I've ever heard Mengelberg & Bennink- but it is an absolutely beautiful tribute to the two late jazz legends.

The Paris Session by the Art Ensemble of Chicago- I couldnt find any info about this album online- I think its a compilation of sorts. My first introduction to the AEC & I loved it- recorded in 1969 its pretty far out. Malachi Favors is an incredible bassist.

banyan & "party star" @ higher ground

banyan is an art rock band with heavy jazz and punk influence, based in Los Angeles, California. led by ex- janes addiction & porno for pyros drummer stephen perkins, the band has also featured both nels cline & mike watt, along with Flea & Thurston Moore. unfortunately for us in vermont, both cline & watt only play west coast shows with the band- so they wont be at higherground this saturday with locals (and friends of this blog) "party star"- but dont let that stop you from going, because judging from the samples on their myspace page banyan rocks in a unique way. bring your momma for a little mothers day eve get down...

saturday, may 12th at higher ground

raccoo-oo-oon is a free rock / freaky psych band from iowa city. in
the vein of the animal collective. they have a bunch of releases out.
website

evan miller is touring with raccoo-oo-oon and he'll be playing a set
of acoustic guitar tunes. Evan Miller is an Iowa City 6-string slinger
who grew up in dusty Oklahoma. Over the last couple years he has
devoted himself to the craft of his instrument, honing his songwriting
and perfecting his playing. He's studied the greats and shows it on
this release, with a nod and an ode to the late great John Fahey. Evan
toils in the dirt of rural Americana and blues, but keeps his sound
fresh and original at the surface.

pink bacon is a local burlington band (ben, todd and brian- former Nest Material).
they do dada dub-noise freak outs. last time i saw them,
there was bacon all over the stage and todd was eating ganja apple pie
during the set.

so mark your calendars & spread the word!

went to the show at kriya studio tonight- great space- big & the music sounds great- looking forward to more shows there. phosphorescent was a fantastic performer. folk songs with hollow body electric guitar & plenty of loops- great strong voice & lovely lyrics. left halfway through the castanets set- i'm trying to fight off a cold & i felt totally satisfied after the phosphorescent set. i've been downloading free jazz like crazy & then listening to the freaky sounds while playing dreamcast tennis. monday the job searching starts for real. 6 weeks of vacation & i'm ready to get part-time back to the real world. tea & then bed. see ya...

viking moses et al

tick tick is putting on a great freaky folky style show friday at the kriya studio on n. winooski behind global market. the show is:

Viking Moses
Castanets
Phosphorescent
Hello Shark

tick tick says viking moses 'ranks among the best of the newest crop of American folk recordings'

castanets & phosphorescent are in the same vein, judging from there myspace pages.

hello shark is a local indiepop band.

sounds like a great night of music- and I've been wanting to check out the kriya studio space, so I'll probably go.
